A project of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Division 14 as part of the program "Kids Don't Float," which launched on the Island two years ago. Founded in Alaska about 10 years ago, "Kids Don't Float" has met success throughout the nation. In New York, it promotes the state law that requires children younger than 12 to don life jackets when boating. The station begins with about 12 loaner jackets in various children's sizes. Their return is on the honor system, but the National Parks Service has agreed to regularly check that vests are always available and in good condition.
